Chapter 23

Gabe held his arm tightly around her. Lily was still shaking.

“Your horse is safe at the sheriff’s office,” Gabe said into her ear. “We need to get you wrapped up and some hot soup inside of you.”

They pulled up at the sheriff’s office and Gabe handed Lily down. The deputy, Andy carried her inside and put her on a chair beside the stove as the others all crowded inside to find out what had happened.

“Take this whisky and sip it,” Carl said and handed Lily a glass. “He smiled. “I think you need one as well, Gabe.” Gabe took the glass and threw it back in on swallow.

“Thanks,” he said.

“Let’s just go over what happened, Lily, and then when you’ve warmed up, Gabe can get you home. In fact, I’ll come along as well.” He looked around and saw that everyone had come back safely. “Are you up to telling us all what happened, so Andy can write it down?”

Lily cleared her throat and ran a hand through her hair. She was just starting to realize how many people had come out in a blizzard to try and save her. Gabe reached across and took her hand.

“Can I just say thank you to everyone who has come out in the snow to look for me.” She looked at Carl.

“What happened?” he asked again.

“I bought red ribbon from Jeannie and set off back home. A young man ran out from the side of the saloon and shouted to me. He ran in front of the horse, and it stopped. He said a little boy was stuck in the snow and he needed help to dig him out.” She took a breath. “I said I would get the sheriff, but he said there was no time. When I didn’t want to go, he pulled me from the horse and dragged me over to his own horse and put me on the saddle. There was no little boy, of course, and we went deep into the forest.”

“What did he do when you reached the place that he wanted to stop?”

“He threw me into the snow and said I was Miss Dogooder, and this was a Christmas gift. Then he rode away and left me.”

“Would you recognize him again?” Carl asked. She nodded. “We’ll arrest the whole lot of those young thugs tomorrow. I might need you to identify him.”

“That’s okay,” she said and looked at Gabe. “Shall I tell them what I think?” He smiled and nodded.

“Don’t spare my blushes.” She smiled back and was starting to feel more like herself. The warmth and the whisky were doing the trick.

“It may sound silly, but it all helps,” Andy put in.

“I’ll say it for her. Martha from the minister’s family,” he could not go on because every man in the room burst out laughing.

“We have all suffered from Martha,” Andy told him. “My wife slapped her across the face.”

“Well, she has been trying to get to me. She came to the inn supposedly with gifts and I took her to the gate to get rid of her.
